The aim is to obtain a clear answer before changing the account. An online comment about someone else's experience is a useful question to investigate, not confirmation that the same restriction applies to you.
Separate three different problems
First, identify what has actually happened. Is this a login or identity-verification problem? A restriction on a particular service or investment? Or a written instruction about closing or moving an account?
These situations call for different responses. Save the exact notice and date, avoiding screenshots that expose account numbers when sharing through unsecured channels. Ask the provider to identify the rule and affected account in writing.
If there is a deadline, ask what happens at that deadline and whether an extension or review is available. Do not turn a solvable access problem into an unnecessary distribution by clicking the first exit option you find.
Why a provider's name is not enough
Fidelity's public brokerage FAQ states that offerings for people outside the United States are limited, that it does not open accounts for new customers residing abroad, and that additional restrictions depend on country and circumstances.[1]
That is a provider example, not a claim that every Fidelity workplace 401(k) has the same terms. Ask the workplace-plan administrator about the plan itself. Do not treat a general brokerage policy as a complete answer for an employer-sponsored account or another institution.
Likewise, a statement that an existing account can remain open does not answer every practical question. You still need to know what you can do with it and how you will receive assistance.
Questions to send your current provider
You can adapt this checklist to your situation:
- I am resident in [country]. Can I retain this specific account?
- What residential-address information and supporting documents do you require?
- May I use a separate mailing address, and how must it be recorded?
- Can I change investments, or are particular transactions restricted?
- Can I receive statements and tax documents electronically?
- Which authentication and account-recovery methods work for me abroad?
- Are there restrictions on deposits, withdrawals or beneficiary changes?
- Is any action required by a specific date?
- Which department handles questions for this account type?
Keep the reply in an account-administration folder. If a representative gives a verbal answer, ask for an official policy link or written confirmation of the account-specific position.
Be accurate about where you live
Do not assume a U.S. mailing address solves a residential-eligibility issue. Ask the institution to explain its requirements and provide truthful information. A relative's home, mail-forwarding service or VPN should not be treated as permission to bypass them.
If your profile is outdated, ask how to correct it. Keep the discussion focused on the permitted arrangement for your actual circumstances, including tax status. Being a U.S. citizen and residing in the United States are not the same fact.
Before opening a rollover IRA
Confirm the receiving institution's answer before initiating a distribution. Describe the account you want, the source of the assets and your residence. Ask whether any service relies on an advisor relationship and whether that relationship can lawfully serve you where you live.
Request a written description of costs and available investments as well as eligibility. Opening an account is only one part of making it useful. If you expect to move again, ask how another change of residence would be reviewed.
Frequently asked questions
Does a restriction mean I have to cash out?
Do not assume that. Ask which permitted options remain, then review the consequences of each. If necessary, obtain professional help before a stated deadline.
Can I use a VPN to fix the problem?
A technical connection does not establish account eligibility. Use provider-approved access methods and resolve residential requirements directly.
Can My401k.International guarantee a provider will accept me?
No. Institutions make their own eligibility decisions. An advisor introduction is not an account-opening guarantee.
What is the most useful first step?
Get the exact account-specific restriction in writing. “I cannot buy this investment” and “I must close this account” are materially different statements.
If you would like help exploring professional support, request an introduction and describe the type of restriction without including account numbers or login details.
